These Cities Have the Youngest Homeowners [New LendingTree Study]
Owning a home in the U.S. isn’t just about location anymore — it’s increasingly about age. For our latest report, we analyzed the average ages of homeowners and renters across the 50 largest U.S. metros to highlight how age is reshaping housing trends. We found that the typical homeowner is now 50–51 years old, while renters skew younger. Here’s what else we found. The oldest homeowners are mainly in California or Florida. Los Angeles (54.60), San Diego (53.63), and Miami (53.38) top the list. Salt Lake City has the youngest homeowners, with an average age of 48.09 years old. Austin, Texas (48.75), and Oklahoma City (48.79) are the next closest. Renters average nearly 45 years old, six years younger than homeowners. Seven of the 10 metros with the oldest renters are on the East Coast — the youngest renters are mainly in the South. The cost of owning a home has risen so dramatically over the years that, for many younger people, it’s simply out of reach. Unfortunately, that reality isn’t likely to change anytime soon.”
