Why Investing in Students Strengthens Tennessee’s Real Estate Industry

In today’s fast-moving housing market, the strength of Tennessee’s real estate industry depends on more than property values, transaction volume, or interest rates. It also depends on the people who will lead the industry into the future. By investing in students through scholarships and mentorship opportunities, Tennessee REALTORS® is building a pipeline of skilled professionals and engaged community leaders who will sustain the industry for decades to come. Building the Future Through Education Since 2019, the Tennessee Real Estate Educational Foundation (TREEF) Scholarship has supported incoming first-year college students in their pursuit of studies related to real estate. Children, grandchildren, and dependents of REALTORS and association staff are eligible. The scholarship represents more than financial support—it’s a signal of long-term investment in talent development. At $2,500 per recipient, the award provides meaningful help for tuition or educational expenses, while reinforcing the message that real estate is not just about selling homes, but about cultivating knowledge, values, and leadership. The TREEF Scholarship also carries a legacy. It was created in honor of Stephen Harding and Linda Woods, who retired in 2017 after decades of service to Tennessee REALTORS. Their commitment to professional development inspired an initiative that now bridges generations of industry leaders. Students Who Inspire Each year, Tennessee REALTORS highlights remarkable recipients whose stories illustrate the impact of investing in students. •  Emelia Belicek of Grimsley was recognized for her academic excellence, graduating as valedictorian and earning state honors. Her dedication and work ethic reflect the resilience needed in both higher education and real estate careers. •  Lexi Kate Woodford of Franklin turned personal tragedy into strength. After losing her father at a young age, she found ways to serve her community and build a sense of “home” for others, embodying the values of care and perseverance. •  Whit McLemore of Collierville approaches real estate through the lens of homebuilding. For him, “home” is not just a structure but the feeling of belonging. His vision for combining real estate with construction reflects the kind of holistic thinking that the industry increasingly values. These stories remind us that scholarships don’t just change one student’s trajectory—they ripple outward, strengthening both the industry and the communities it supports.  Photo by Marta Klement Why It Matters to Real Estate Scholarships like TREEF matter because they address a fundamental reality: real estate is a people-driven business. The industry’s long-term health depends on professionals who combine technical expertise with empathy, resilience, and vision. Investing in students has several tangible impacts: •  Strengthening workforce pipelines. As housing needs evolve, Tennessee requires professionals with diverse skills—from finance and law to construction and urban planning. •  Supporting community leadership. Students who benefit from scholarships often give back, becoming engaged community members and advocates for housing issues. •  Elevating professional standards. By fostering education, Tennessee REALTORS ensures that future industry leaders are equipped not just to close transactions but to uphold ethics, fairness, and service. These opportunities for education and training also help maintain public trust in the profession. Broader Benefits for Tennessee The impact of investing in students extends beyond real estate. Tennessee’s economic vitality depends on a strong housing market, which in turn depends on professionals who understand community needs. Supporting students ensures that the next generation of leaders is prepared to strike a balance between affordability, growth, and sustainability. It also reinforces the state’s reputation for cultivating talent. In an era where many industries face shortages of skilled workers, scholarships signal to young people that Tennessee values their potential and wants them to succeed. That message strengthens recruitment, retention, and ultimately, the competitiveness of the state’s housing sector. Programs like TREEF mirror broader workforce development efforts across Tennessee, where industries and associations collaborate to invest in talent pipelines. When industries step up to fund scholarships, they’re not just giving back—they’re ensuring their own longevity. A Commitment to the Future Tennessee REALTORS is one of the state’s largest and most influential trade associations, with more than 36,000 members across 20 local associations. Beyond legislative advocacy, professional development, and transaction support, initiatives like TREEF show that the organization is equally committed to people—the students and families who represent the future of the industry. As TREEF Trustee President Patti Whalen explained, each student’s story demonstrates resilience, vision, and leadership. That blend of qualities is exactly what Tennessee’s real estate industry needs to thrive in the decades ahead. Investing in students is more than a scholarship—it’s an investment in Tennessee’s future.  Photo by Andrea Piacquadio
